Mental health awareness is a cause very close to me, because I have fought mental illness for all of my adult life.
I have dealt with depression and borderline personality disorder my entire adult life. To add to that, I chose to get into one of the most intense and stressful careers one could have. I worked as an EMT for several years, and worked in EMS for over a decade of service. My career was cut short in 2013 when I began dealing with severe PTSD as well.
Over the last few years, I have struggled with my mental health. I’ve been in and out of hospital more times than I can count. I’ve had bouts of self harm, but none for the last three years. I’ve had suicidal thoughts envelope me.
I am an open book. I feel intense emotion. I am a suicide survivor. I’ve made it this far thanks to the support of my family and friends. I’ve made it this far also because I have reached out, I have worked hard, and have stood tall. I am a fighter who has not been ashamed of my dealings with the mental health system. The purpose of this blog is to shine a bright light on a dark topic. I aim to educate and encourage, not incite and anger.
In the last year, I have begun a new path in life. I have begun working as a freelance journalist in the counties of Paintearth and Stettler in Alberta, Canada. I have pushed my limits and grown because of it.
When I’m not writing, I can be found hanging out with my wife at our store, or hanging out with my dog and cat with which we share our home and our hearts. I’m a PS4 gamer, a reader, and a car and sci-fi enthusiast.
